a week in fashion #71

By Marlene | Published: 17. June 2012

This week wasn’t so much about fashion as it was about football (not to be confused with “footballers and fashion”. If that were the case, this post would never end). I get quite caught up in international competitions like the Euros – Do I really want to see Greece play Russia? Of course I do! – but I also managed to sneak in a viewing of “Marc Jacobs & Louis Vuitton” this week, a brilliantly funny documentary by Loïc Prigent, the same director who’s behind the genius “The day before…” series that follows fashion designers in the hours leading up to their shows.

I realize not everybody is as nuts about football as I am. So in case you want to pass the time differently until the final (July 1, in case you’re wondering), here’s some alternative viewing: my favourite fashion films. Footballers nowhere to be seen.

*Isaac Mizrahi: Unzipped. This is how I always imagined a fashion designer to be like.

*Valentino: The Last Emperor. A majestic documentary. Worth it alone for the catty conversations between Valentino and his partner Giancarlo Giammetti.

*Bill Cunningham New York. The original street style photographer.

*The September Issue. It’s so Vogue!

*Reality Bites. Not really a movie about fashion. But just look at some of the outfits Winona Ryder and Janeane Garafalo wore. Still amazing.

*Zoolander. Quote: “I’m pretty sure there’s a lot more to life than being really, really ridiculously good looking. And I plan on finding out what that is.”

*A Single Man. Every single shot in that movie is a painting. Also: Colin Firth in suits.

*Clueless. Worth it alone for the wardrobe scene.

*Funny Face. Audrey Hepburn. Enough said.

What are yours?

Und Wong Kar-Wai: In the Mood for Love, Chungking Express, Fallen Angels.
