spruce v.intr. | to make oneself neat and smart in appearance |
My name is Marlene. I’m a journalist and if you had told me ten years ago that it would be my job to write about fashion one day, I would’ve stared at my run-down sneakers and whispered: Really? That would be, like, so cool! Although I’ve since learnt a few other words besides “cool” to describe clothes, I often still can’t quite believe I get to think about hem lengths and heel shapes for a living. I will occasionally write about my work here or link to one of my articles. Other than that spruced is where I tell stories about personal style, including my own, about fashion on and off the runway, about design and beauty, and sometimes just about life. I’ve made my home in Berlin with my two boys, James and Arlo.
I started this blog with James in 2010. Spruced is a solo project now. Of course, James still makes beautiful handbags and made-to-measure clothes and you can see and buy them on his website and from the online shop here. He also writes his own blog, which is here.
If you’re looking for me elsewhere online, I write a column for Slomo, in which I try to answer my friend Okka’s fashion questions in a way that makes me look like an expert. I spend far too much time on Pinterest. And perhaps you’d like to follow me on Instagram.
Spruced is written in English and German. Because I like it that way.
