christmas menu

By Marlene | Published: 27. December 2011

On the morning of December 24, we got up, walked down the street and had breakfast at Café Gaia in South Yarra. It wasn’t until we were halfway through the meal that we realised: It’s Christmas! It just didn’t seem normal to be able to sit outside in late December.

And I don’t know if the fact that the sun was shining on our faces as we were eating, but it was one of the best breakfasts I’ve ever had. The kind of meal that spreads happiness from your belly to the rest of your body. That makes it impossible to talk, because you want to give all your attention to the food on your plate. I had poached eggs with a side of avocado, which was amazing, but I was still jealous of James’s piadini with bacon, scrambled eggs and pesto. I’m pretty sure that his eyes actually glazed over when he had the first bite and he’s determined to try and make this recipe when we come home to Berlin. That is, if we do. We’ve discovered that life in Melbourne revolves around breakfast, which for me is at the top of “Reasons to move to Melbourne”, and there’s a fantastic café culture in the city. I will give you our list of favourite eateries in Melbourne – but for now I’ll have to go and eat. Breakfast, of course.

Hope you’ve had just as wonderful a Christmas as we have, with bellies full of joy.
